Opener Maintenance for Atlanta Home Owners

liftmaster garage door openerDASMA, the Door & Access Systems Manufacturers Association, has developed recommendations for keeping your garage door opener operating safely. Most homes in the metro Atlanta GA area have garage doors with openers installed. As your garage door is the largest moving piece of machinery in your home, we'd like to urge you to take a look at the following steps to keep yours operating safely. You can also find similar information about garage door maintenance on our previous post.

1. Opener Safety Reversal

DASMA recommends testing the reversal system of your garage door opener by placing a 1 1/2'' piece of wood on the floor in the center of the garage door. Standing well away from the garage door (and keeping pets and children out of harms way!) use a remote or the wall button to close the door. If your garage door opener does not reverse when the garage door hits the wood, call a professional for repair or replacement. This is a safety feature that's required for all openers made after 1993, and it's important to the safe operation of your garage door.

2. Opener Safety Eyes

Make sure your openers safety eyes (located at the bottom of the garage door opening, on both sides) are properly aligned and functioning. Keeping the kids and pets away from the garage door, use the remote or wall button to close the garage door. As the door is traveling down use an object to obstruct the path of the safety eye beam. The opener should immediately reverse, bringing the garage door to the fully opened position again.

These steps ensure proper operation of the two most important safety features on a garage door opener. If your opener is a little older, you may find that it doesn't have any features similar to these. If that's the case, it may be time to consider replacement with a newer, up to date model.
